Mount Union Students Receive Accounting Internships

2015 Feb 11

Applying accounting knowledge and professional expertise outside of the classroom, Trevor Wilson, a student at the University of Mount Union, received a full-time accounting internship for the spring semester.

Wilson, of Rootstown, Ohio, is a(n) accounting major and is interning for State of Ohio Auditor's Office in Youngstown, Ohio.

Senior Anna Brocker has returned to HBK to intern for a second semester.

"My experience completing an internship has been extremely beneficial," Brocker said. "Classroom experiences are important, but being able to apply what I have learned in the classroom to real world situations is exciting."

With a strong foundation in accounting, math and business, students will expand their comprehension beyond the campus environment. Their critical thinking skills and accounting proficiency will prove to be an invaluable qualification throughout their internships.

"The skills I have learned in classes - especially in my Seminar in Accounting class that covered governmental accounting - give me ways to process questions and work through them," said State Auditor office intern Taylor Mace, a senior. "Just being able to hear the vocabulary before stepping out into the real world has given me an edge so that I am not completely lost in new positions."

Students received one-on-one guidance from Mount Union accounting faculty members Ruth Pogacnik, associate professor of accounting and Russell Tietz, assistant professor of accounting, and were equipped with the necessary aptitudes to succeed at their prospective internships.

"Our students perform very well on the job and are very competitive with students from other universities," said Tietz. "Some of our students have been asked to intern again the following year and others have received full-time job offers."

Tietz explained that this is the second year for the accounting full-time internship program and the number of full-time interns from last year has doubled.

"Without the skills and education that each and every one of my professors has provided me, I would not be qualified to be working on these financial statements for cities and counties," Mace said. "I am so thankful for everything that all of my accounting professors have done for me thus far, and I love the full support that I receive from them through all of my college career choices."

Combining knowledgeable courses, real-world experiences and a committed faculty, Mount Union accounting interns will enhance their talents for their upcoming careers.

"This internship is a great opportunity because it furthers my education and also opens doors for me to start my career," said junior Kyle Pavilonis. "This experience will go a long way for me, plus I will have the benefits of networking with so many people in my future field - it is priceless."
